For many parents, the word orthodontics brings to mind teenagers with full sets of braces. However, an early orthodontic evaluation— for Phase I or Early Treatment—is an important step in supporting healthy growth during childhood.
At Bird Smiles Orthodontics, our woman-owned, boutique practice in Washington, DC focuses on monitoring facial growth, jaw development, and tooth alignment during a child’s most active growth years. This proactive approach allows us to guide development gently and conservatively, often reducing the need for more complex treatment later.
Signs to Watch for in Young Smiles
While every child develops differently, the American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) recommends that children see an orthodontist by age seven. This early visit allows our expert orthodontists to spot potential needs early, even if immediate treatment isn’t required.
As certified specialists in dentofacial orthopedics, Dr. Sonia Talley and Dr. Katie Clark evaluate growth patterns that may benefit from early orthodontic care, including:
• Crowding or misplaced teeth
• Early or late loss of baby teeth
• How the upper and lower jaws fit together
• Difficulty biting or chewing
• Thumb-sucking habits
• Tongue posture
• Mouth breathing & more

Seeing Beyond the Surface: The Role of Digital X-Rays
As part of your child’s complimentary consultation, we use advanced digital X-rays, including panoramic and cephalometric views, to evaluate how the teeth and jaws are developing beneath the gum line.
These high-resolution images allow our Washington, DC orthodontists to identify growth patterns or crowding that may benefit from Phase I orthodontic treatment. This technology helps us create a precise, customized treatment plan while keeping the experience quick, comfortable, and kid-friendly.

Modern Treatment Options: Traditional Expanders and Invisalign
Thanks to today’s modern technology, early orthodontic treatment is more comfortable and discreet than ever. Depending on your child’s needs, we may recommend one of the following options.
Traditional expanders are time-tested appliances used to gently widen the upper jaw and create space for incoming permanent teeth. At Bird Smiles Orthodontics, the expander is typically worn for just THREE months.
Invisalign palatal expanders is a modern, removable option designed for growing children. It uses a series of custom fabricated expanders created with Invisalign’s technology to gently guide upper jaw development over time. Because the appliance is removable, it allows for easier cleaning and added comfort.
We also use the iTero Digital Scanner to capture a precise 3D image of your child’s teeth, eliminating the need for messy traditional impressions.
