Dentofacial
Orthopedics

Our experts can guide the development of a child’s face and jaw to correct skeletal discrepancies and create a stable, healthy bite.

Treatment goes beyond straight teeth.

Orthodontists like Dr. Sonia Talley and Dr. Katie Clark are certified specialists in orthodontics and dentofacial orthopedics. Most people are familiar with orthodontics, but what is dentofacial orthopedics? Well, while orthodontics deals with tooth movements, dentofacial orthopedics involves guiding facial growth and development.

Depending on what type of jaw and/or facial abnormalities are present, Dr. Talley or Dr. Clark can use certain appliances, such as a palatal expander, during childhood. This orthopedic correction will sometimes happen before orthodontic treatment with braces or Invisalign Teen or at the same time.

Dentofacial Orthopedics

We can create a foundation for a lifelong beautiful smile.

For some kids, a two-phase orthodontic treatment plan will bring about the best results. During phase 1 treatment, we use an appliance like an expander to help the jaw develop. The goal is to create a harmonious facial appearance, make room for the permanent teeth to erupt and ensure the top and bottom teeth will come together properly.

When phase 1 is complete, your child will have a resting period where we let the remainder of their permanent teeth come in. They’ll then start phase 2 orthodontic treatment with full upper and lower braces or Invisalign® Teen. Dr. Talley and Dr. Clark will make sure each tooth is in harmony with the other teeth, lips, cheeks and tongue for the best possible oral health, appearance and function.
